Shokokuji Jotenkaku Museum

From August 8, 2022 (Monday), an exhibition will be held at the Shokokuji Jotenkaku Art Museum to unravel the history of the relationship established between Shokokuji and the samurai government.
Shokokuji Temple was built by Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, the third shogun of the Muromachi Shogunate, and is also known as the birthplace of Sesshu, a famous ink painting artist. The temple was sometimes caught up in the turmoil of the times, including the Onin War, and was burnt down four times, but was rebuilt under the patronage of the powers that be and has continued its history to the present.
The exhibition introduces a total of 96 items from the first and second terms, including treasures related to the Ashikaga shogunate, folding screens depicting turbulent times, documents issued by the shogunate, and paintings and documents showing the Tokugawa and other samurai families' connections.
