An exhibition is currently being held to trace the footsteps of artists Kyubei Shimizu and Rokubei, who were active in the two worlds of sculpture and ceramics from the postwar period to the Heisei era. This is the first attempt to connect Kyubei and Rokubei on a single axis, and it is attracting a lot of attention.
Shimizu Kyubei/Rokubei is one of the most famous families of Kyoto pottery, active as the ceramic artist Rokubei, and also highly regarded as the sculptor Kyubei, using aluminum and other materials. He created many large scale sculptures and monuments, and left many public artworks at JR Kyoto Station, Kyoto Municipal Industrial Center Miyakomesse, Kyoto Museum of Kyoto, and others.
Follow in the footsteps of Kyubei and Rokubei through their fusion of sculptures that combine flat and curved surfaces influenced by Kyoto's alleyways, thick-walled forms, and works that use distortion and cut-outs. Along with the exhibition, we recommend that you get a copy of the "Kyoto Street Corner Tekkku Kyubei-san Map" distributed at the venue and on the website of the National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto, and tour the nine locations in the city where Kyubei's works are located together.
