A comprehensive cultural facility opened in 1988 to introduce Kyoto's history and culture in an easy-to-understand manner. 2F and 3F general exhibition rooms introduce outstanding works of art related to Kyoto in conjunction with occasional projects. The film theater on the 3rd floor is currently showing a series of masterpieces from the Kyoto Prefecture's collection.
Other highlights include the annex (former Bank of Japan, Kyoto Branch), designated as an Important Cultural Property as a representative modern Western-style building, and the Roji Store, which recreates the streetscape of a Kyoto machiya latticework.
