Saimyoji Temple was founded in the Heian period by Chisen Shonin, the nephew of Kobo Daishi (Kukai). It is known for its natural scenery that changes with the seasons: cherry blossoms and azaleas in spring, fresh greenery in summer, autumn foliage in autumn, and snowscapes in winter. During the season of fresh greenery, you can enjoy both the green maple trees growing in the precincts and the red autumn leaves near the entrance at the same time.

[Jingoji Temple], which is related to Kukai, the founder of Japanese esoteric Buddhism, located halfway up Mount Takao. From in front of the main hall, the fresh greenery of the mountains of Kyoto, which Kukai and others must have seen, spreads out in front of you. From the maple trees that stand on both sides of the stairs, you will be captivated by the transparent blue maple leaves hanging down.

Tofukuji Temple is the main temple of the Tofukuji school of the Rinzai sect of Buddhism. The Tsutenkyo Bridge in the precincts is also known as a famous place for autumn leaves. About 2,000 Japanese maple trees and trident maples fill the valley with a breathtaking beauty.

Kifune Shrine enshrines Takaokami, the god of water supply. The green maple leaves that cover the stone steps of the approach to the shrine, which are lined with Kasuga lanterns, sway in the wind like a roof, and the sunlight filtering through the foliage is pleasant. In the special light-up of the fresh green at night, the green maple trees illuminated by the light give off a different beauty from the daytime.

Nijo Castle, a World Heritage Site, was built by Ieyasu Tokugawa and has been the setting for numerous historical events. The castle is also known for its autumn foliage, but the green maple trees in the Ninomaru Garden and around the Ninomaru Palace are fresh and beautiful. Together with the Kurume azaleas in the western part of the castle and the Omurasaki azaleas planted in the Honmaru Garden, they brighten up the castle.
