It was founded in 806 (Daido 1) in the early Heian period by Enchin Sozu, who founded Kiyomizu-dera Temple. Yang means willow, and is familiarly known as 'Yanagidani Kannon'. As a place of prayer for recovery from eye disease, it has long been worshiped by the imperial family and those suffering from eye disease.
In recent years, it has become a hot topic for its flower chozubachi, which is decorated with seasonal flowers, and it has become known nationwide as the 'flower chozubetsu temple'. The colored leaves are also beautiful. It is a famous spot for hydrangeas, and the corridor that extends from the Shoin to Okunoin is called the ``Hydrangea Corridor'' from early June to early July, when the flowers are in full bloom.
