Enjoy brunch and shopping at [ROBYN], a café and grocery store in Shimizu Gojo

August 18, 2025: Open

After living in New York for nine years, essayist Aya Nihei moved to Kyoto and opened the café and grocery store [ROBYN] (Shimogyo Ward, Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture) in Kiyomizu Gojo. She says the shop is named after a friend she met in New York named Robyn. The shop opened on the site of the former restaurant [reynard], which was run by a close friend in Kyoto whom she had befriended after moving there. While retaining the original tables, chairs, and interior, the space exudes a simple yet sophisticated charm that is sure to capture your heart.

ROBYN Huevos Rancheros

The Huevos Rancheros (1,700 yen) has a slightly spicy flavor that leaves you wanting more. The homemade lemonade soda (900 yen) is packed with fruit pulp.

The highlight is the huevos rancheros, which Mr. Nihei reportedly used to eat often while living in New York. It’s a classic Mexican breakfast dish made by mixing fried tortillas with tomato sauce and eggs until they’re nice and crumbly.

ROBYN

“The way we make ‘uebos’ varies slightly from restaurant to restaurant and from household to household,” says Mr. Nihei. “Using fried tortillas might be something unique to our place.” In addition to our original medium-dark roast coffee blend, we also have wine and beer available.

ROBYN: Introspection, Grocery

The grocery shelves inside the store are stocked with ingredients and seasonings that Mr. Nihei loves and has selected with an eye toward “Kyoto charm.” It’s a pleasure to enjoy brunch and wine on a day off, then do a little shopping before heading home.

ROBYN Pancakes

Our New York-style buttermilk pancakes (1,500 yen) are moist and fluffy, with a subtle hint of tartness—drizzle them with Canadian golden maple syrup to your liking. Our original blend coffee (700 yen) has a crisp, refreshing taste.
