The main shrine of Matsuo-taisha

Enshrining the God of Sake [Matsuo Taisha]

It was founded in 701 by Hata-no-Imikitori at the order of Emperor Monmu. The shrine was revered as the family deity of the family. The deities worshiped at the shrine are Oyamakui no Kami and Ichikishimahime no Mikoto. The Hata clan, a clan of Japanese immigrants, had many skilled sake brewers, and by the end of the Muromachi period (1336-1573), the shrine was worshipped as the "first sake brewing god in Japan. The shrine is also known as one of the best places in the Kansai region to view wildflowers, and the shrine grounds are beautifully decorated with gorgeous golden flowers from mid-April to early May every year. The cute omikuji (omikuji fortune) of a white tiger guarding the western part of Kyoto is also popular.
