[A 11-minute walk west from Heian Jingu Shrine, this machiya (townhouse) with a white noren curtain is a landmark.
The history of the building, which has been carefully passed down from generation to generation, is everywhere in the space. Nobuko Matsuzaka, the proprietress of Gut Momi, has started a lab with the theme of "intestinal activities" in a beautiful and peaceful machiya (townhouse).
On the first floor, you can enjoy a variety of fermented food, and at the salon on the second floor, you can receive intestinal massage, which has a reputation for relaxing the mind and body.
The lunch menu consists of two types of dishes: intestinal rice with a choice of fish or meat as the main dish, and fermented spice curry. Homemade fermented seasonings are also used to great effect in side dishes such as flavored eggs pickled in soy sauce koji and pickles made with vinegared koji. The proprietress, who says, "Now that I have finished raising my children, I enjoy growing fermented foods," will tell you about the flavors you are interested in without revealing anything about them.
Her motto is to enjoy life. She says, "I find that many women in their 40s to 60s, who are close to my age, are hard workers. To keep your intestines healthy is to take good care of yourself. Let's take care of ourselves first." In fact, the business in this machiya space is limited to one year, and they plan to move next spring.
