The "hinoyojin" (watch out for fire), a talisman synonymous with Atago-san, contains four characters meaning "fire, or the need for modesty," and is said to be good if enshrined in the kitchen of a house. It was customary in the old days to pray for safety in the house and to be careful of fire.
The summit commands a panoramic view of downtown Kyoto, and is also known as one of the best spots for sunrise on the first day of the new year, with views of Mount Hiei and the Hira mountain range. It is also said that if a child climbs Mt. Atago before the age of three, he or she will be spared from fire for the rest of his or her life.
