February 22, 2022 open
Kaiyotei has been in business for over 100 years, since 1915, when the first owner opened the restaurant in Ishidanshita, Gion. It is a long-established Western-style restaurant that has made brilliant achievements in establishing Western-style food culture in Japan, including the development of Western-style lunch boxes eaten with chopsticks and teriyaki sauce, which is now known around the world.
In February 2022, Kaiyotei will move from Pontocho to Miyagawa-cho. The restaurant chose a quiet location one street away from the main street because they wanted to "take better care of the local customers. Masayuki Bessho, the fourth-generation owner, and his son Daikyo, the fifth-generation owner, are the ones who are working in the brand-new kitchen of the new restaurant. With the relocation of the restaurant, they are now moving toward the next 100 years.
As people get older, restaurants inevitably become more expensive. We want to remove that barrier and let younger people know about the delicious dishes we make, such as the domi-glace sauce that takes about two weeks to make, and the time and effort that goes into making them," said the owner.
Some of our customers have been coming here since the first generation, and some bring their grandchildren, so I feel that this was a place that would become a taste of someone's memories. We are happy to continue to be a place that will remain in someone's memory," he said, "We want to pass on the taste of Japanese-style Western cuisine that has remained unchanged through the ages, and we want to share it with others.
