Hyakumanben's handmade market started in 1987 with only a few stores. Today, about 450 stores have gathered, and the market is so popular that stalls are selected by lottery every month. A fair held at Kitano Tenmangu Shrine on "Tenjin-san no Hi", the 25th of every month. About several hundred to a thousand stores selling gourmet foods, antiques, handmade goods, antique sundries, etc. line the streets. The event starts around 6:00 in the morning, and the grounds are lit up after sunset. The bargains are said to sell out, so getting there early is recommended.
