The Gion branch of the long-established Kyoto pickles specialty store "Daian" will reopen on December 1, 2024 (Sunday). The new store will feature an onigiri (rice ball) café, Gion Enmusubi, in the hopes of providing a new dining experience that makes pickles more accessible, convenient, and tasty.
The restaurant has a counter with nine seats for eat-in and table seating, where customers can enjoy freshly made rice balls and other items. The rice used is Kinumusume from Kameoka [Agri Ni no Umi], and the fluffy texture of the rice and the chewiness of the pickles create a perfect balance.
From left to right: Ajisuguki 330 yen, Ume Radish 330 yen, Gokujo Chirimen Sansho 385 yen, Mentaiko Egg 407 yen *All prices when eating in
Seasonal side dish, Shogoin Kabura no Surinagashi (grated turnip) 220 yen (price when eating in). The refined taste with a hint of dashi (Japanese soup stock) goes great with onigiri!
The restaurant also offers unique side dishes such as surinagashi made from Shogoin turnips, the same ingredient used to make Senmaizuke at Daian.
All products are available for takeout, making them perfect for walking around town.
The pickles used in the rice balls can be purchased in the store, so take some home to enjoy at home.
