A view of [Fushimi Inari Taisha] enshrining the god of prosperous business and bountiful harvest...
Fushimi Inari Taisha Shrine is one of the most popular sightseeing spots in Kyoto. In the surrounding area, you will find a variety of stores that you will want to stop by, such as long-established Japanese confectionery stores, sweets stores that are the talk of the town on SNS, and unique cafes. Enjoy strolling freely while eating and choosing souvenirs on your way to and from the shrine.
Inari sushi (150 yen per piece) has a shelf life of only one day. Minimum order for eating out is 1 piece; for take-out and in-store dining, minimum order is 4 pieces.
[A long-established shop, established 1540 years ago, is located near the back approach to Fushimi Inari Taisha Shrine. The name of the shop was given by Toyotomi Hideyoshi. The specialty is handmade inari sushi, with sweet and spicy fried bean curd cooked in a secret broth every morning. The sushi rice is richly flavored with home-made sweet and spicy burdock root, black sesame seeds, and hemp seeds (onomi). It is recommended to dine in the restaurant before or after visiting the shrine, or to eat it whenever you feel hungry.
The crunchy texture is irresistible. 500 yen for a piece of Mizumaru Mochi. The combination of soybean flour and molasses is also irresistible!
[Marumochi-ya is a Japanese confectionery specialty store with two stores near the Fushimi Inari Taisha shrine. When you break the transparent, round, water-marumochi like a water balloon, strawbies pop out. This playful Japanese sweet is popular on SNS as a signature product. The plump, moist rice cake can be topped with brown sugar or soybean flour, if desired. Marumochi with a crispy outer layer and a soft and chewy inner layer of red bean paste is also a recommended gourmet food to try.
Nishiki Ohagi, which has many fans, is 400 yen for 2 pieces. Anko (red bean paste) and kinako (soybean flour) are available, each at 200 yen per piece.
Dairiki Shokudo has been a local favorite for about 50 years since 1966. Kentaro Ogawa took over his parents' diner and revived it as a book café. We recommend the owner's handmade two-color o-hagi with anko (red bean paste) and kinako (soybean flour). Ingredients include red bean paste made from carefully selected Hokkaido Dainagon azuki beans, Shiga Habutae glutinous rice, and high-quality domestic soybean flour. The soft texture of the soft mochi and the gentle sweetness of the millet sugar make it easy to eat, and it has earned a reputation as a "melt-in-your-mouth" o-hagi. The seasonal product, Yomogi Mochi (mugwort rice cake), which appears in the spring, is also popular and should not be missed.
(Left) Egg yolk marinated in tamari soy sauce after freezing: 300 yen (Center) Small, soft chirimen-jako (dried young sardines) seasoned with green pepper and sesame oil: 220 yen (Right) Mentaiko cream cheese, a rich combination: 250 yen
The owner, Mr. Osumi, opened this old private house café with the idea of creating a place like a teishoku-ya where college students in their prime can comfortably go to eat. There are about 20 kinds of rice balls, including daily specials, made from carefully selected Koshihikari rice and wrapped in seaweed imported from Tsukiji. In addition to the standard items such as grilled salmon and freshly shaved okaka seaweed, there are also rich and satisfying ingredients such as pork kimchi and mentaiko mayo that are sure to make your eyes water. After a long day of walking around, recharge your energy with your favorite omusubi.
Authentic matcha latte, made by a tea wholesaler, is 600 yen for both iced and hot. The popular matcha latte float topped with gelato is 900 yen.
This gelato store is run by a long-established tea wholesaler that has been making Japanese tea in Uji since 1922. The gelato is made from carefully selected tea leaves of the highest quality, allowing you to enjoy the deep taste and rich aroma of tea. The matcha latte is recommended along with a variety of other gelato, including tea and seasonal fruits. The latte is a luxurious drink filled with "Premium Matcha Keika," a dark matcha green tea. In the hot summer months, a matcha latte float topped with gelato is perfect. In April 2024, an eat-in space with about 30 seats is scheduled to open on the second floor.
