You can also enjoy Arashiyama in the off-season! "Shigureden" reopened as [Saga Arashiyama Bunkakan] on 11/1

Hello everyone. I am a WebLeaf staff member who always enjoys spending time worrying about where to take my friends when they come to Kyoto for a visit.

Arashiyama, one of the sightseeing spots in Kyoto, is the site of the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu, a collection of 100 waka poems by 100 poets, each of whom selected one poem to be included in the collection. On November 1, the museum "Shigure-den," which conveys the charm of the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu, was reborn as the Saga Arashiyama Bunka-kan (Saga Arashiyama Museum of Art), which introduces a wide range of Japanese art. What is the whole picture? Is there a new café? I attended the preview with great anticipation.

From the Wataratsuki Bridge, walk along the riverside path upstream for about five minutes and you will find the Saga Arashiyama Bunkakan (Saga Arashiyama Museum of Literature)!

Reopening Special Exhibit runs through January 27, 2019.

Let's go inside at once. On the first floor of the Saga Arashiyama Bunkakan, there is a permanent exhibition introducing the charm and history of "Hyakunin Isshu," a set of 100 poems said to have been born at the foot of Mt.
This time, as a special exhibition for the reopening, the "Arashiyama: A Touch of Excitement Both Now and Once Upon a Time" was held! Arashiyama" was held as a special exhibition for the reopening.

Yano Yashio, "Autumn Landscape of Takao and Spring Landscape of Arashiyama," a late Edo period painter, on view for the first time.

Other works include "ika-dashi no" self-portrait, which is said to have been painted on a kimono at a drinking party by Buson Yosa, a well-known haiku poet, and works by Takeuchi Seiho and Tomita Keisen, modern masters who had ateliers in Saga Arashiyama.

In the back of the museum, the permanent exhibition room, which explains the history of the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu, from its birth to its spread to the general public through the form of karuta, has been renovated as "History of the Hyakunin Isshu" and is now more powerful than before.

There is also a booth with easy-to-understand explanations of the 100 poets who appear in the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu. English translations of the waka poems are also available.

The distinctive figures are displayed along with waka poems, and as you look at each one, you will be drawn more into the charm of the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu.

This is a hand-painted karuta that was made in the early Edo period.

WebLeaf staff, who became interested in competitive karuta through "Chihayafuru," which has been made into a manga and a movie, are very interested in this game. The rules of competitive karuta are explained in an easy-to-understand manner in the video corner.

Next, we went to the second floor. On this day, there is also a sign showing the face of the reopening special exhibition!

Visitors can sit on tatami mats and enjoy the works of art in a relaxing atmosphere while relieving the fatigue of strolling around Arashiyama.

Further ahead is the Tatami Gallery, a 120-tatami mat hall! Here, too, you can relax and enjoy the fascination of Japanese-style paintings.
They are also planning to take advantage of these tatami mats to hold premium karuta tournaments, including a hotly contested battle for the challenger's chair and the challenger's decision for the karuta Meijin and Queen. In the near future, the challenger-deciding game for the 65th Meijin and 63rd Queen of Karuta will be held on Sunday, November 18, 2018, from 10 to 16:00.

What a wonderful space with light coming through the large glass windows!

And newly established on the first floor is the cafe "Arashiyama OMOKAGE Terrace". This café can be entered directly from the garden and can be used only as a café.
This restaurant was produced by Gion Okumura, a famous restaurant in Gion. They offer "Arashiyama Gozen," a lunch menu that allows you to enjoy a little bit of everything delicious in any season, and pound cake made with sake lees from the Matsui Sake Brewery, which is said to be the oldest brewery in Kyoto's Rakuchu district.

In the garden in front of you, you can view cherry blossoms, satsuki azaleas, and autumn leaves, and feel the changing of the seasons.

The Saga Arashiyama area was a popular autumnal spot in the Heian period (794-1185) and a popular cherry blossom viewing spot in the mid-Edo period (1603-1868), and is now a popular year-round spot for the general public. Even in the off-season, a visit to Saga Arashiyama Bunkakan is sure to be a pleasant experience!
