Founded in 853. The official name is "Zenrinji", and it started when Shinjo Sozu, a disciple of Kobo Daishi (Kukai), built a training hall for Shingon Esoteric Buddhism. It was turned into the Jodo Nenbutsu Dojo by the seventh chief priest, Yokan Risshi. Eikan devoted himself to charitable activities, such as building medical facilities for the needy within the precincts. The common name [Eikando] is derived from Eikan Ritsushi. The precincts are lined with halls connected by corridors, and the statue of Amida Nyorai in the main hall is known as 'Mikaeri Amida Nyorai' with its face facing diagonally behind. Since ancient times, it has been known as the Eikando of maple trees, and is a famous spot for autumn leaves.
