The cherry blossom viewing season has arrived! In this issue, we will introduce some cherry blossom viewing spots in Shiga, ranging from classic spots for cherry blossom viewing to some less popular ones, where you can drop by on your days off or even after work or school.

The Biwako Sosui, which carries water from Lake Biwa to Kyoto, is a canal built in the Meiji era (1868-1912) using the best civil engineering technology of the time. It is also known as one of the best cherry blossom viewing spots in Shiga Prefecture, and cherry trees are planted along both banks of the Sosui near Mitsui Temple, where you can enjoy fantastic nighttime cherry blossom viewing.

Mitsui Temple is home to more than 100 national treasures and important cultural properties, as well as famous gardens and a three-story pagoda. The vast precincts of the temple are home to approximately 1,300 cherry trees, mostly Someiyoshino cherry trees. During the special nighttime viewing, the entire temple grounds are lit up and the cherry blossoms come to life beautifully.

Nigori Pond Nature Park is a park developed around Nigori Pond, an old reservoir located next to the Konan Industrial Park, and also contains the vestiges of a former traffic park. There are approximately 1,000 cherry trees around the park, which are also called "Senbonzakura" (one thousand cherry trees). During the cherry blossom season, the park is illuminated with Bonbori lanterns and lights, making it a spot where visitors can enjoy beautiful cherry blossoms even at night.

In Toyo Park, built on the ruins of Nagahama Castle, approximately 600 cherry trees, mostly Someiyoshino cherry trees, bloom simultaneously around the Nagahama Castle History Museum. This beautiful and fantastic scenery has been selected as one of the 100 best cherry blossom viewing spots in Japan. The view from the observatory of Nagahama Castle is spectacular.
