The world of blue maple leaves spreading beyond the window [Genkoan]

It began as a small hermitage surrounded by mountain foliage about 680 years ago, and became a Zen temple of the Soto sect when the main hall was built in the Edo period (1603-1868). Upon entering the main hall, the first thing you see are two windows, one for lostness and the other for enlightenment. As you quietly watch the blue maples swaying beyond the window frames, you will feel grateful that you are part of nature and that you are being kept alive.

It is also famous for its blood ceiling, a relic of Fushimi-Momoyama Castle, which still bears the traces of a battle between the party of Torii Hiko-emon Mototada, a vassal of Tokugawa Ieyasu, and the forces of Ishida Mitsunari.

Regular zazen sessions (free of charge) are held on the first Sunday of the month from 7:00 a.m., so those interested should inquire in advance.
