Oishi Shrine

[Oishi Shrine] Enshrines Ako Gishi Kuranosuke Oishi

Oishi Shrine, built in 1935, is located beyond the Higashiyama Pass. The deity is Kuranosuke Oishi, who was the chief retainer of the Asano Naishokuto family of the Ako domain in Banshu, famous for the Chushingura story. Oishi's relative Genshiro Shindo had a house there, and it is said that he lived in Yamashina from 1701 to 1702 (Genroku 14 to 15), before the raid on Kira's house, to hide and devise a plan. Because of this, the shrine is known as a shrine that was built by people who admired Oishiuchi and the other 47 warriors. The shrine is believed to be blessed with the great blessing of fulfillment of a great wish in honor of the Ako Yoshishi, who successfully defeated the warriors. In addition to the main hall, the shrine, and the shrine office, there is also a gijinsha (shrine for the righteous) dedicated to Rihei Amanoya, and the treasure house exhibits items related to Oishi. The shrine is also known for the "Gishi Matsuri" festival held every year on December 14, when a large procession of 300 people parades through Yamashina.

The weeping cherry tree, affectionately called "Oishi Cherry Blossom" by the locals, was planted as a sacred tree in the year of the shrine's founding. Every year in April, a "cherry blossom festival" is held with tea ceremonies. Someiyoshino cherry trees planted on both sides of the approach to the shrine create a tunnel of cherry blossoms to welcome visitors.
