Ichihime Shrine

A small shrine for women in Kyoto [Ichihime Shrine]

The shrine is a rare place in Japan where women in Kyoto pray for good marriages, childbirth, safe childbirth, and bad years. The shrine was built in 795 (Enryaku 14) by the order of Emperor Kanmu as a guardian shrine for both the east and west cities (around today's Nishi Honganji Temple), and moved to its current location in 1591 (Tensho 19) when Hideyoshi Toyotomi rebuilt Kyoto.

Amano-Mana-no-i is one of the seven famous waters of Rakuyo. It is said to have been used by emperors in the birth of their children, and is still used for tea ceremonies, flower arrangement, calligraphy, and other purposes.

The water from the Amano-Manaoi well on the shrine grounds is a historic water that has been used by successive emperors as a birthwater. Above the well are adorable hime-mikuji, or "princess fortune," with wishes written on them.
