[2023] I really don't want to tell you! 9 Selected Cherry Blossom Spots in Kyoto

The cherry blossoms have begun to bloom, and the season has arrived for the fluffy petals to dance in the wind! In this issue, we will introduce cherry blossom viewing spots that locals visit on a daily basis and don't really want to tell you about. You can enjoy delicate and beautiful cherry blossoms, such as a single large tree quietly blooming or cherry blossoms along a riverside.

1. A well-known cherry blossom viewing spot [Haratani-en] / Kinkakuji Temple area<br>

Cherry blossom garden owned by Muraiwa Noen, which handles lumber such as Kitayama cedar.
Normally not open to the public, it is open to the public during the four seasons when the flowers are in bloom. During the cherry blossom season, the vast grounds, covering an area of about 4,000 tsubo (about 1,200 m2), are dyed in cherry blossom colors, creating an almost ethereal atmosphere. Visitors can enjoy various types of cherry blossoms such as weeping cherry trees and Fugenzo cherry trees.

The predecessor of the temple [Sumizome-ji Temple] is said to have been founded by Yoshifusa Fujiwara in the Heian period (794-1185).
Sumizome-dera Temple is named after the "Sumizome-zakura" cherry trees that bloom on its grounds. Although the temple grounds are cozy, in addition to the sumizome-zakura, someiyoshino cherry trees, yaezakura cherry trees, and goiyo cherry trees are in full bloom. Currently, a young cherry tree, the fourth generation, is blooming with small, light-ink colored flowers. The "Cherry Blossom Festival" is held every year from the end of March to the beginning of April, and when visitors pass through the temple gate, the temple grounds are enveloped in cherry blossoms. On Sunday, April 2, the "Sumizome Cherry Blossom Festival" will be held for the first time in three years, featuring various concerts on stage (brass band, gagaku music performance, mandolin performance, etc.) and a marché.
