Kurodani Konkai Komyoji Temple was originally a hermitage built by 43-year-old Honen Shonin after completing his ascetic training on Mount Hiei at the end of the Heian Period. The temple is the head temple of the Jodo sect of Buddhism and is popularly known as "Kurodani-san" (Kurodani-san).
The vast temple area on the hillside overlooking the city of Kyoto is planted with approximately 100 cherry trees, including Someiyoshino cherry trees and weeping cherry trees. Especially beautiful are the cherry trees along the path in front of the 23-meter-high gate, the Gokuraku Bridge, and the lotus pond.

The weeping cherry tree, planted in the year of the shrine's founding as a sacred tree, is affectionately called "Oishi Cherry Blossom" by local people, and is one of the most popular cherry trees in Kyoto, attracting many visitors to the shrine. The cherry blossoms bloom early, around the end of March. In early April, the cherry trees lined with Someiyoshino cherry trees along the approach to the shrine are at their best.
