［Higashi-honganji Temple (Higashiyama Jyoen) holds the "Joya no Kane" (bell tolling ceremony) every year on New Year's Eve. Normally, only priests are allowed to strike the temple bell, but the general public is welcome to do so. The temple is also the only temple in Japan to hold "Kasho-no-Kane" (bell tolling on New Year's Eve), where visitors can toll the bell not only on New Year's Eve, but also from New Year's Day through the first three days of the New Year.

Each temple and shrine offers a scroll, a big guardian talisman (colored paper), and a seal book, and visitors can begin their tour at any of the temples.
