MIHO MUSEUM

From July 15th (Saturday) to August 20th (Sunday), 2023, ``Maki-e Hundred Flowers - Master Craftsmen of the Edo Period and Their Genealogy'' will be held at [MIHO MUSEUM].
In the latter half of the 17th century, makie artists, whose names were unknown to the general public until then, were introduced along with their addresses in publications such as Kyoto's tourist guide book "Kyo Habutae," and eventually began to write their names on their works. I started writing it down. After the 18th century, when townspeople gained popularity, the number of people who accepted maki-e increased, and the number of maki-e artists increased accordingly. Trends brought about competition, and the level of technology improved significantly, ushering in an era in which many maki-e artists rose to prominence.
This exhibition will introduce the works of these maki-e masters along with their genealogy, which later led to the traditions of each region, and express the spirit of the Japanese people at the time who sought beautiful maki-e. Feel the rich and enjoyable era of maki-e from 200 to 300 years ago through the works on display.
