``I was curious that the sign looked familiar,'' and ``I can't believe I'll be able to rediscover the same taste I ate when I was young!'' Knuckles, a New York style cafe that opened near Daitokuji Temple from 1985 to 2006, is back for the first time in more than a decade. The style remains the same, with unique sandwiches such as the homemade sausage Knuckles Sandwich and the tuna and avocado baked sandwich Laguna Beach Memory, served with cumin-scented potato salad.
Takahiko Uno, who worked in advertising agency, revived the legendary sandwich that reminds Kyoto people of their youth. He is one of the people who knows the flavor of the time when he worked in the kitchen of [Knuckles] for about three and a half years during his university days. When he thought about a second life with his wife Mio, who loves wine culture, he came up with a plan to revive Knuckles.
``Sometimes my husband would make tuna and avocado sandwiches at home.I didn't know it was a specialty, so I ate it happily, thinking how delicious it was,'' Mio says. In addition to sandwiches and pasta, you can enjoy cheesecake from PapaJon's, run by Charles Roche, the original owner of Knuckles, and New World wines selected by Mio in the shop, which has a cozy townhouse feel.
They also sell wine on the second floor, so if you're looking for wine to drink at home, please ask.
