The official name of the shrine is Goryo Shrine, which is generally called Kami-Goryo Shrine to distinguish it from Shimo-Goryo Shrine. The shrine is believed to ward off plague and disease, and was established on the occasion of the relocation of the capital to Heian (794-1185), when eight deities, including Prince Hayara, were enshrined at the shrine. The shrine is known for its iris family "Ichihatsu," which blooms in early summer, and in autumn, visitors can see the magnificent chrysanthemum flowers along with the yellow leaves of ginkgo trees.
