Kenninji Temple is the oldest Zen temple in Kyoto, founded in 1202 by Eisai, the founder of the Rinzai school of Zen Buddhism, and is one of the five temples of Kyoto.
From December 1 (Fri.) to 10 (Sun.), 2023, by advance reservation only, the JR Tokai "So, Kyoto, Let's Go! will offer a special autumn viewing program. In addition to the illuminated autumn leaves in the beautiful garden, visitors can view the powerful ceiling painting "Souryuu" in the Dharma Hall from chairs or lying on tatami mats in the inner sanctuary, which is normally off-limits to visitors.
