March 25, 2024 open

Houmai is the restaurant created by Huagichi Gao, who is known as the founder of Kyoto Chinese cuisine. [Houmai Ro was opened in 2015 by a direct disciple of Mr. Gao. This year, the restaurant moved to its current location, which is equipped with an elevator, to make it more accessible to a wide range of customers. The easy access from Imadegawa Station and the view of the city of Kyoto from the window are also attractive features of the new location.

Inheriting the menu and methods from the past, the basic taste is based on the broth made from chicken bones and kelp. The taste is light and elegant, without too much garlic or ginger, and is the quintessence of Kyoto Chinese cuisine.

Karashi Soba at Houmairou

Karashi-Soba (1,200 yen) is the most popular menu item. The custom-made noodles made from semolina flour, which is mainly used for pasta, have an impressive chewy texture that makes them easy to eat even when soft!

All of the distinctive menu items have longtime fans, such as the noodles with spicy sauce and mustard sauce, spring rolls rolled in egg dough, and juicy thin-skinned siu-mai (Chinese dumplings).

Fong Mai Lou's Yun Bai Meat

A new menu item introduced in May is the Unpai Lau (1,200 yen). Tanba pork is boiled and seasoned with a sauce flavored with octagonal horns, dried Chinese peels, and cinnamon. It goes perfectly with a 700 yen five-year glass of Shanghai's beloved Shanghai Yellow Liquor.

The sommelier carefully selects Shaoxing wine, which is served in a jar or in a wagon, and the lineup includes a weekly brand that changes weekly.
