Founded about 1,400 years ago, the shrine stands halfway up the mysterious Akagami Mountain, where mountain worship has been practiced since ancient times. It is said that Prince Shotoku, Saicho, and Minamoto no Yoshitsune worshipped at the shrine. Today, as a "god that bestows victory and happiness," the shrine is visited by people with various wishes and dreams, including professional athletes, businessmen, and people preparing for entrance exams. Victory is bestowed on those who are sincere in doing what needs to be done. It is a sobering reminder of the importance of overcoming oneself rather than conquering one's opponent. The experience of making omamori by hand is also popular.

The entrance to the hiking trail up Mt. Akagami, the sacred mountain of Tarobo Shrine, is Ryugusha. It takes 25 minutes one way along a well-maintained path with a view of trees. From the summit of Mt. Akagami, 357.2 m above sea level, you may see windmills on the Aoyama Plateau in Mie Prefecture on a clear day.

The first thing you want to do when you arrive is to head for the main shrine, which appears to be rising out of the rock. The 742 steps leading up from the parking lot at the foot of the mountain are quite strenuous, so you will feel a sense of accomplishment when you reach the top. A rewarding view unfolds at the observatory in front of the main shrine.

The width between the rocks is only 80 cm, and it is said that the rocks were pushed open by the power of God. It is said that if a person with a good heart makes a wish and passes between the rocks, the wish will be granted; if a person with a bad heart passes, he or she will be caught between the rocks.

The 15-minute omamori-making experience is popular: choose your favorite design from more than 150 types of omamori bags and tie a knot with a string of your favorite color. Write your wish and place the omamori in the bag along with the god's "mittama" (spirit). One omamori bag costs 1,500 yen.
