A “Tea House for Adults” Opens in Gojo, Kyoto! A Special Retreat with Just 10 Seats That Captures the Essence of a Tea Wholesaler

The café of [Shimizu Ichihōen], a tea wholesaler founded in 1945, has relocated from Higashiyama Shichijō to Gojō and reopened. Renamed [Saryo Shimizu Ichihōen] (Shimogyo Ward, Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture), it has been reimagined as a “tea house where one savors fragrance and quiet moments,” offering not only tea and sweets but also tea ware, the ambiance, and the hospitality.
The interior design was handled by Akira Sugihara, who has created numerous restaurants and traditional Japanese “sukiya-style” spaces, including the renowned [Mizai] in Higashiyama. The interior, featuring just 10 seats at a tatami-mat-covered counter, has been meticulously designed—from the garden and lighting to the architectural fixtures, the texture of the materials, and even the guest’s line of sight—creating an air of dignity and a sense of open space within the limited area.

Saryo Shimizu Ichiyōen Matcha Mont Blanc

"Roasted Chestnut and Pie Matcha Mont Blanc"—Perfect for Fall, with a drink included: 2,980 yen

In such a setting, guests can enjoy not only high-quality tea but also a selection of seasonal sweets served in small portions—known as “chagami hassun”—as well as unique treats like matcha Mont Blanc, available only at a tea wholesaler. The classic “Shimizu Matcha Parfait,” which layers varying shades and textures of Uji matcha in a single cup, will also continue to be served.
In addition, starting Wednesday, September 16, 2026, the restaurant plans to begin serving a tea house-style lunch menu during the daytime (for guests who arrive by 1:00 p.m.). Furthermore, plans are underway to offer evening service inspired by the idea of “ending the day with a cup of tea.”
Step away from the hustle and bustle of the tourist spots for a moment and take some time to leisurely savor the simple pleasure of sipping tea.
