[2026] 8 Recommended Shrines in Kyoto for the Nagoe-no-harae and Chigaiwa-kuguri Rituals

On June 30, marking the halfway point of the year, people participate in the “Nagoshi no Harai” Shinto ritual, in which they pass through a chigaiwa ring to purify themselves of the impurities accumulated over the past six months and pray for good health and safety for the remaining half of the year. As June begins, straw rings are set up at shrines throughout Kyoto, and preparations for the ceremony get underway. In this article, we’ve selected and highlight shrines—primarily in Kyoto City—where you can pass through the straw ring. Why not visit this traditional event, a beloved summer tradition?

1. A Shrine for Severing Bad Ties and Forging Good Ones [Yasui Konpira-gu] / Gion

[Yasui Konpira Shrine] is famous nationwide as a shrine for severing bad ties and fostering good ones. The shrine’s principal deity, Emperor Sutoku, renounced all worldly desires and devoted himself to spiritual retreat at Kotohira Shrine in Sanuki—where he had been exiled after his defeat in the Hōgen Rebellion—which is why the shrine came to be known as a place for severing all karmic ties and bad connections.
Starting around Monday, June 15, “hitogata” (paper dolls) are distributed to help people transfer their impurities onto them.

2. [Kitano Tenmangu], a shrine dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, the god of learning / Kitano Shiraume-cho

Kitano Tenmangu is the head shrine of the approximately 12,000 Tenmangu and Tenjin shrines nationwide dedicated to Lord Sugawara no Michizane (known as “Lord Suga”). On June 25, the anniversary of Lord Sugawara’s birth, a private Shinto ritual (closed to the public) is held, and a “large straw ring” with a diameter of about 5 meters—said to be one of the largest in Kyoto—is installed at the Romon Gate. Within the shrine grounds, small “chigaiwa” rings, about 7 to 8 centimeters in diameter, are distributed to ward off misfortune and disasters.

[Heian Jingu] was founded during the Meiji era to commemorate the 1,100th anniversary of the relocation of the capital to Heian. The Chinowa will be set up at the Otenmon Gate—the main gate facing south—starting on Sunday, June 14.
