[2026] Recommended Beer Gardens & Rooftops in Kyoto...
Now that October is here, it’s the perfect season for getting out and about. In Kyoto and Shiga, a wide variety of events—from art and food festivals to hands-on experiences—are taking place all over the region, both indoors and outdoors! Our editorial team has selected some of the most interesting events from across the area to share with you. Be sure to check out the spots that catch your eye.
From Saturday, October 3, 2026, to Sunday, December 6, 2026, the “Zen and Ghibli” Kyoto Exhibition, organized and produced by Studio Ghibli, will be held at the [Kyoto City Kyocera Museum of Art, New Wing: Higashiyama Cube] (Sakyo Ward, Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture). This exhibition was conceived based on the book *Zen and Ghibli*, which compiles a dialogue between Studio Ghibli producer Toshio Suzuki and a Zen monk. The exhibition area, centered on the world of Director Hayao Miyazaki’s latest film, *How Do You Live?*, features famous lines and stills from Ghibli works, as well as Zen paintings and calligraphy hand-drawn by Mr. Suzuki. It is a unique, experiential exhibition that allows visitors to sense a Zen-like “perspective on life” through Ghibli works. In Kyoto, where Zen temples and Zen culture still thrive as part of everyday life, come and experience a moment of reflection on Zen alongside Ghibli.

The “Arashiyama Tsukidoro” light-up event is being held in the Arashiyama area through Sunday, November 8, 2026. First held last year and attracting more than 60,000 visitors, the event has been further enhanced this year. From the illumination of the “Bamboo Grove Path” to a roughly 30-meter-long bamboo corridor adorned with 1,500 bamboo balls and a fantastical mist display, visitors can enjoy an even more enchanting Arashiyama by night. The bamboo lanterns illuminating the walking path through the bamboo grove were crafted by local residents in community workshops, and the chance to admire this diverse array of creations is another highlight of the event. The venue consists of both free and paid areas, each featuring different displays, so be sure to enjoy the contrasts as you experience a uniquely Kyoto autumn evening.

This hands-on game event involves purchasing a special mystery-solving kit—which includes a booklet and various items—and then visiting the actual locations to solve puzzles based on information found throughout the area.
