The Inner Sanctuary of the Yang Guifei Kannon Hall at Sennyuji, the Head Temple
From Thursday, October 1, 2026, to Sunday, November 8, 2026, the “Autumn Limited-Time Sutra Copying Event” will be held at the Yang Guifei Kannon Hall at [Sennyū-ji Temple] (Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture).
This event commemorates the 800th anniversary of the passing of Gachirin Daishi Shunjo Risshi, the founding abbot of [Sennyū-ji]. After returning from the Song Dynasty in China, this event invites participants to reflect on Venerable Shunjo, who devoted himself to the revival of Buddhist precepts at [Sennyuji] after returning from the Song Dynasty in China, while carefully transcribing sutras one character at a time before the statue of Yang Guifei Kannon.
The term “sutra copying” might sound a little daunting, but the appeal of this event is that even first-timers can easily join in. What matters isn’t writing beautifully or finishing quickly, but focusing your mind on the single character before you and moving the brush slowly. It’s a chance to step away from your smartphone for a while and spend some “time reflecting on yourself”—something you rarely get to do in your daily life.
Take a break from your busy daily life while strolling through Kyoto in the fall. Why not enjoy a moment that’s a little different from the usual?
