Kyocera Museum of Art, Kyoto: Sakura-sui-kan
[Kyoto City Kyocera Museum of Art] (Sakyo Ward, Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture)—on its grounds stands the former office building, “Sakura-sui-kan.” Built in 1933, this “unfinished space”—which is normally off-limits to the public due to ongoing renovation work—will serve as the venue for a post-international architecture exhibition.
The exhibition, which opened on Saturday, January 24, 2026, is the return exhibition of “Neutral Point | In-Between,” the Japan Pavilion exhibition at the 19th Venice Biennale International Architecture Exhibition, held in Venice, Italy, in 2025. This special exhibition reimagines the project presented at this event—known as one of the world’s largest architecture exhibitions—by transposing it into the context of Kyoto’s landscape and spaces.
This exhibition explores the future of generative AI from the perspective of the “in-between” space shared by humans, non-humans, and the environment, presenting it as a space for dialogue. The curators are architect Jun Aoki and curator Tamayo Iemura. The participating artists are SUNAKI (a duo consisting of Taichi Sunayama and Toshikatsu Kiuchi) and Asako Fujikura + Takahiro Omura. The two complementary installations resonate with one another, forming a single artistic universe.
Japan has participated continuously in the Venice Biennale International Architecture Exhibition since 1991 and has received numerous international accolades. This marks the first time that a follow-up exhibition of the Japan Pavilion has been held outside of Tokyo in both the fields of art and architecture. Held in Kyoto, home to many art and architecture educational institutions, the exhibition promises to foster new cultural exchanges and expand creative horizons.
“Neutral Point” is an experience you encounter not in a finished exhibition space, but in a building that is still in the process of change. Why not come experience this architectural exhibition—reimagined in a style unique to Kyoto—at the Sakura Suikan, which is open for a limited time?
