On Saturday, May 30, 2026, the popular monthly “Food Experience Day” will be held at the [Kyoto Food Culture Museum: Ajiwai-kan] (Shimogyo Ward, Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture), located a 2-minute walk from JR “Tanbaguchi Station.” Also on the same day, an event will be held at the nearby [Kyoto City Central Market]. Be sure to check out these two days, where you can enjoy the charms of food from various perspectives.

1. What is Kyoto Food Culture Museum Ajiwaikan?

[The Kyoto Food Culture Museum Ajiawaikan is a food experience facility located near the Kyoto Central Market. It offers visitors the pleasure of "knowing, cooking, and tasting" by presenting Kyoto's unique food culture and the charms of the market.
Exhibits where visitors can learn about Kyoto's traditional and seasonal ingredients, cooking classes and lectures by professional chefs, workshops for parents and children, and other food events are held from time to time. [There are also many opportunities for demonstrations and tastings using fresh ingredients from the Kyoto Central Market, allowing visitors to learn more about Kyoto's food culture.

2. Saturday, May 30, 2026: Tataki Bonito Cooking Class / Ajikai-kan

"Food Experience Day" is an event where you can explore Kyoto’s food culture, seasonal dishes, and market ingredients. Held monthly with a different theme each time, May’s event featured a hands-on workshop on making seared bonito (katsuo no tataki). The bonito—quickly seared on the surface with a blowtorch to lock in the umami, then lightly smoked with cherry wood chips to infuse it with aroma—is absolutely exquisite. Even cooking beginners can easily participate, so why not take this opportunity to give it a try?
*Walk-in spots available. Limited availability.
