A Side Trip to [Kyoto Racecourse]. A Local's Guide to Shops in Yodo [Guest Article]

When you think of Yodo, do you think of the racetrack? That’s the image most people have, but there are actually all kinds of charming shops there, too.
This time, a reader named Arinko shared her recommendations for shops in Yodo.

1. Takeout Available! [Totoraku], a restaurant offering a wide variety of seafood bowls

There are times when long lines form at [Goraku]. Since it was a weekday, we were able to get a seat right away. We ordered the Two-Color Tuna Rice Bowl. It was piled so high that it almost overflowed the bowl. It was topped with just the right amount of green onions and nori—a dish that tuna lovers will find irresistible. The fall menu item, the Pacific saury rice bowl, also caught our eye.

2. [X.COFFEE (By Dot Coffee)]—a café with a relaxed atmosphere that opens early in the morning

[X.COFFEE] is a great spot for a morning outing. With both counter and table seating, it’s a place you can enjoy whether you’re alone or with a group. That day, I had the egg toast. It comes with lettuce, tomato, and a sausage—perfect for breakfast. It pairs perfectly with a tangy cup of coffee.

4. Take some Japanese sweets from [Okuyama Confectionery] and take a break at [Yodo Castle Ruins Park] during this pleasant season.

In the spring, when the cherry blossoms were in bloom, I took some three-color dango and strawberry daifuku from [Okuyama Confectionery] to a nearby park. The Japanese sweets, which change with the seasons, are appealing, and the prices are reasonable. There are benches in the park where you can relax. If the weather is nice, it’s also fun to draw there.

And there's more...

We also organize local events. [Natzeria ~ 100% Nut Butter Specialty Store ~].
Their signature nut butter drink. I haven’t really heard of many other shops like this, so I was curious to check it out. I ordered a hot drink, and the nutty flavor blended perfectly with the milk for a gentle, comforting taste. The owner has been making daily improvements to the menu, such as their nut bowls. They also host events to help revitalize the Yodo area.

Yodo is actually full of charm—it’s home to places like a restaurant famous for the delicious croquettes made by an elderly woman. If you’re ever in the area, be sure to stop by!
